Founded
in 1993 when its members were students at the Royal Academy of Music,
the Galliard Ensemble have won many prestigious awards including:
The Maisie Lewis Young Artist Award presented by the Worshipful Company
of Musicians leading to a highly successful debut recital at the Wigmore
Hall; the BBC Radio 3 Young Artists forum; the Young Musicians Trust
Scholarship, including recitals in St.Martin's-in-the-Field and Edinburgh,
and performances for the Park Lane Group Series and Fresh Series at
the Purcell Room. In 2000/01 they were winners of The South East Music
Scheme.
The Galliard Ensemble are regular performers for music societies
and music festivals, including the BBC Proms, Huddersfield Contemporary
Music Festival, Brighton, Harrogate and Bath Festivals, and RAM
Ligeti and Film Music festivals. The Galliard Ensemble gave the
centrepiece recital in the City of London Music Society Poulenc
Centenary series, followed by a successful Bridgewater hall recital
given as part of the Manchester Midday series. They regularly tour
in Portugal in many of the country's major Festivals broadcasting
on Radio and Television.
The Galliard Ensemble has a strong interest in contemporary composition.
In addition to working with Paul Patterson, Gyorgy Ligeti, Richard
Rodney Bennett, they have also worked with Sir Harrison Birtwistle
on his quintet Five Distances for their performance at the
1999 BBC Proms. To stimulate new composition for the wind quintet
they have established the Galliard Ensemble Wind Quintet Composition
Competition now in its fifth year of running and promote the winning
works in their concerts each year at the Southbank Centre in London.
