Guy
Johnston was born in 1981 into a family of musicians, and followed
his two elder brothers into the Choir of King's College, Cambridge.
He began cello lessons at the age of five, and was awarded a scholarship
to Chetham's School of Music in 1994. During this time he participated
in regular masterclasses with Ralph Kirschbaum at the Manchester
Cello Festival, and also with Steven Isserlis in the International
Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove. A committed recitalist and chamber
musician, Guy performs at major music festivals at home and abroad
and broadcasts regularly for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. In November
2002 he made his South Bank debut at the Purcell Room with his accompanist
Tom Poster.
Guy plays on a rare Italian cello made in 1820 by Pellizon, provided
by an anonymous foundation.
Tom
Poster was born in Cambridge but settled in Oxford at the age of
eleven. He went to Cherwell School and studied music at King's College,
Cambridge, where he gained a double-first class honours degree.
In 2000 he won the keyboard finals of both the Royal Overseas
League Competition and the BBC Young Musician of the Year.
Tom has given numerous recitals and concerto performances in venues
which include the Barbican Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell
Room in London, the Sheldonian Theatre and Holywell Room in Oxford,
as well as at concert halls in continental Europe and the Middle
East. He composes, and a number of Tom's performances have been
broadcast on BBC 2, BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. He has written chamber
operas and incidental music for the theatre.
